Ingredients

Preparation
Place ham hock, shank, onions, garlic, split peas, and water in a large, heavy-bottomed pot and bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer, then cover and cook on low heat for 1 hour 45 minutes.
Remove ham hock and shank from the pot and pick the meat and skin. Small-dice the skin and medium-dice the meat, then add back to the soup, discarding the bones. Stir well to combine and finish with cracked black pepper.
Serve topped with oyster crackers and grated Parmesan cheese, as desired.
